Bonnie Schneider
After graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) and then witnessing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75), I am convinced that education should be one that integrates study of the arts alongside study of other disciplines. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist with obtained an MA in 1967, and also an Ph.D. earned from UCLA. The ethnomusicology course, which I started from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is ideally located in an music department within the College of Letters and Science. I enjoy pursuing multiple interests as well as seeing the larger image. I love instructing both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) who I've written three texts namely Music in India A Study of Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) and graduate students. And I alternate periods when I am pursuing primarily academic activities in addition to periods of administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group in Asian Studies, since 1999, and is now the as Chair of the Department of Music again).
